1984 Summer Olympic Games, USA Today~As the junior member of the USA Today Olympics team assigned to the women's 3000 meter, I had been positioned at the less desirable turn 4 of the Coliseum track, which was in shaded light in the late afternoon and far from the finish line. No one could anticipate that Mary Decker's infamous on the track collision with rival Zola Budd would happen in just this spot. Despite her famous mishap, Decker Slaney set 36 U.S. and 17 world records during her career and is considered one of America's greatest woman athletes.

Sports assignment, San Bernardino Sun~Successful sports photographers must learn to anticipate and plan for the action. In the days before autofocus, good sports photography was also a measure of skill in acquiring and following focus by hand. When covering the NFL, if you knew a quarterback might call a sideline reception to stop the clock, you needed to get to an appropriate spot downfield and pre-focus your lens to be ready for the action. It didn’t always work out of course, but here’s a case where I nailed the call and got the shot I wanted.

Spot news assignment, USA Today~Traveling with a reporter, I arrived in Mexico City within 12 hours of the 8.1 magnitude earthquake that struck on September 19. After spending most of the day covering the devastation, my colleague and I finally checked into our hotel, a relatively unscathed building in the Zona Rosa. Within minutes of arriving in our room, the huge 7.5 magnitude secondary aftershock of September 20 hit, causing extreme shaking and all the lights in the hotel to be extinguished. As we were scrambling in the dark to get under desks or doorways, I heard a woman from down the hall scream in what seemed like an agonizing foretelling of our doom... We survived, but it was an indelible experience!

Sports assignment, Corona Daily Independent~My first-ever professional sports assignment was to cover a local girls softball game. I had only recently acquired an “autowinder” for my manual focus SLR that could advance the film at a whopping 2 frames per second. Armed with this amazing innovation and a slow 300mm f/5.6 lens, I completed the assignment with this image. Honestly, even with today’s high-speed cameras, this decisive moment could have been missed. Lucky? Sure, but luck favors the prepared.
Spot news assignment, San Bernardino Sun~Today it seems like relations between the news media and public officials are often strained, but I remember having a good rapport with the public servants at most of the agencies I encountered during my years covering news. These firefighters, after verifying the boy was okay, positioned themselves so that I had an unobstructed view for this shot as the boy was being raised to safety. A lovely professional courtesy.

  • ~I made this photograph shortly after the mural was completed in 1984 while I was in L.A. to cover the Summer Olympic Games. It remains one of my favorite "found" images. (I'd like to thank Montreal artist 'Neath' for reacquainting me with the authorship of this work through his blog entry at Walking Turcot Yards.)
